Serenity Beneath the Stairs

Most people use the space under their stairs for a hoover, shoes, or a forgotten box or two. But with a little imagination, this often-overlooked corner can become something extraordinary.

At this year’s Chelsea Flower Show, Kazuyuki Ishihara’s Cha No Niwa Japanese Tea Garden stopped visitors in their tracks – a masterclass in balance, precision and the quiet poetry of design. His work has long been an inspiration, so when a client came to us with a dream brief, to create something extraordinary beneath their staircase, we were thrilled.

The family had fallen in love with Japan, and our challenge was to capture that serenity and artistry within their home. The result? A breathtaking bonsai installation that transforms an overlooked corner into a moment of calm, light and balance.

A design-led approach

Every element of this piece was carefully considered to balance authenticity with contemporary elegance.

Scale, Form & Foundation

The scale and shape of each bonsai were meticulously designed to feel natural and sculptural. The placement of the rocks was equally considered, grounding the composition and anchoring the trees within their setting. In Japanese garden design, rocks are regarded as the bones of the landscape: symbols of stability and endurance that bring balance and quiet strength. Their positioning defines the flow of the design, allowing every other element, from moss to light, to respond in harmony.

The Power of 3.. and 5

The stones were positioned according to the Japanese principle of the power of three, creating balance and harmony at the heart of the scene. When combined with the two bonsai trees, the composition flows into the power of five adding depth, rhythm and a sense of completeness to the design.

Backlighting & Uplighting

Crisp LED backlighting frames the installation, highlighting it as a piece of art while adding a contemporary edge. Carefully placed uplights, hidden within the moss, were used to illuminate the sculptural trees and add warmth. The shadows cast onto the walls became a work of art in their own right, extending the composition beyond its boundaries.

Moss & gravel

Moss was hand-shaped into elegant forms that flow with the trees, while gravel was raked in a traditional Japanese style to bring rhythm and cohesion to the whole scene.

The result

What was once an empty under-stair void is now a contemplative Japanese-inspired landscape, a modern Zen garden within the home. It is a statement of design and craftsmanship that transforms an overlooked corner into the heart of the space.
