Mediterranean Artificial Garden Design for a Chelsea Townhouse
The Brief
Twilight Trees was commissioned to design and install a bespoke artificial planting scheme for the front and rear gardens of a beautiful Chelsea townhouse. The client wanted to create a luxury, low-maintenance garden that felt like a Mediterranean escape while complementing the property’s existing architecture.
For the front garden, the brief focused on increasing privacy from the street without compromising the elegant character of the townhouse. At the rear, the client wanted to create a Mediterranean-inspired garden, taking inspiration from their handcrafted blue and white Italian tiles to achieve a space that felt warm, relaxed and perfect for entertaining.
As with all of our artificial outdoor planting projects, the scheme needed to be weather-resistant, durable and require very little maintenance throughout the year.
Designing a Mediterranean-Inspired Garden
The rear garden already had the foundations of a beautiful outdoor space. Whitewashed brick walls, an outdoor fireplace and striking Italian tiles provided the perfect backdrop for a bespoke planting scheme inspired by Mediterranean courtyards.
Our design centred around creating height and texture while keeping the seating areas open and uncluttered. Rather than filling the garden with large planters all around, we introduced wall-mounted pots, climbing vines and carefully positioned greenery to maximise planting without reducing usable floor space.
A carefully selected mix of pawpaw, rosemary, artemisia and jacobaea brings texture and movement to the borders, creating a naturalistic planting scheme that feels established all year round.
Warm terracotta pots contrast beautifully against the blue and white tiles, instantly bringing a Mediterranean feel to the garden. A layered mix of artificial rosemary, grapevines, Swedish ivy, variegated ivy, artemisia, bay and cedar trees creates a natural-looking scheme that feels established and full of character.
The fireplace was framed with planting across the upper brickwork, allowing the greenery to blend naturally with the existing climbing plants while keeping the heat vents below clear.
The result is an outdoor space that feels balanced, welcoming and full of texture from every angle.
